Free Trip! Guess What Santa’s Airfare Cost

I am Rick Seaney, the CEO and Founder of FareCompare.com, and normally I’m a mild-mannered, even-keeled kind of a guy. But not last week!

After booking 66-flights on 12-airlines, all jammed together in the space of just 12-days, well … let’s just say I went a little crazy. Okay, a LOT crazy.

Picture this: I have to hit all 48-of our contiguous U.S. states. Before I even get going, I have to figure out how to plot the routes (and you can read about that here). Then, I had to start making the purchases.

Have you any idea what it’s like to buy tickets for 66-flights, while inside the 14-day advance purchase window, even as you look for super deals or at least good deals? It’s not easy (understatement of the year).

Then, you make mistakes along the way: sometimes, for example, the schedules are just too tight, and you have to rebook (10-rebookings, actually, but who’s counting). Then there are the truly epic glitches, such as our purchase of what we thought were tickets for Wilmington, Delaware … that turned out to be tickets for Wilmington, North Carolina!

It gets better: it turns out there is no commercial airline service to Delaware-not at the moment, anyway. We’re still working on that one.

In the meantime, if you have the closest guess, down to the penny, what the total cost of all of Santa’s airline tickets will be (by putting your guess in the comments)… FareCompare will give one (1) lucky winner a free airline ticket for travel in the continental United States (the rules are listed below)

HINT: If you’ve been following the airfare sales in FareCompare’s Deals section, you’re ahead of the game!

  214. What a great (and exhausting!) idea. Forty years ago lower prices, the comparative enjoyment of air travel and my youth might have enticed me to give something like this a try but today it sounds like sheer torture and therefore absolutely unconstitutional if done under duress. Rick, my guess is you came up with some of your price wizardry and paid exactly $4512.12 for this adventure.

    Comment by Claudia — December 20, 2007 @ 5:29 pm

  215. No one is going to win this contest. He said you have to guess the money spent on 66 fares TO THE PENNY. How in the world is anyone going to guess that! And if you look at the rules, the “retail value” of this round trip for one is $450. I don’t understand the big deal here. Can somebody explain?
